To date, there have been several studies showing the possible benefits of red betel leaf for certain health conditions.

1. As an antiseptic
A study was conducted to determine the positive effects of red betel leaf for human health, one of which is as an antiseptic, especially as an ingredient for washing hands. Red betel is used with the consideration that this ingredient has long been used by the public as an antiseptic, antidiabetic, anticancer, and to cure infectious diseases.

Based on research results, the antiseptic from red betel leaf liquid is superior to non-antiseptic soaps and antiseptic soaps. However, it is necessary to analyze whether the remaining bacteria are pathogenic (causing disease) or not. Furthermore, the statement of the research results also requires the support of other scientific evidence.

2. Inhibits dental caries
Dental caries is one of the most common health scourges in Indonesia, usually caused by Streptococcus mutans bacteria. According to research, the benefits of red betel leaf for eliminating dental caries may be obtained, considering that this material contains essential oils, flavonoids, alkanoids, and phenolic compounds.

All of these compounds are basically active against mutans bacteria, and the results were quite satisfying because red betel essential oil has a strong effect on inhibiting the growth of S. mutans bacteria.

3. Has antibacterial properties in certain bacteria
Several studies have stated that red betel leaves are proven to be more effective as antibacterial agents than green betel leaves. This is based on the content of essential oils which function as antibacterial. In addition, other studies have shown that the ethanol extract of red betel leaves can inhibit the growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Although the various studies above provide possible benefits of red betel leaf, these claims still need further research to be sure.
